In business there are three kinds of work

operational, managerial and entrepreneurial work

Full Spectrum PyramidAs a business owner you need a thorough understanding of three kinds of work, each necessary for the success of the business:

Operational work. This is doing the work of the business, which has the end result of providing value to customers.

Customer focused work is operational work that directly creates and delivers value for customers.

Business support work provides resources and support for customer focused work. It supports the business.

Managerial work is overseeing, planning, and controlling the work of the business.

Supervision, organizing, developing business systems and processes, business planning, budgeting, and rule making are examples of managerial work.

Entrepreneurial work is the work of building the business.

Creating Strategic Intent, developing new ways of doing things, identifying target markets, establishing the brand of the business and its products, establishing the positioning and differentiation of the business, and finding and exploiting new opportunities are examples of entrepreneurial work.

As a business owner you need "triple vision." Touneed to understand all three kinds of work and you need to be aware when you are doing each kind.

You can't allow the day-to-day pressures of operational and managerial work to crowd out entrepreneurial work because it is entrepreneurial work that determines the future of the business.

On the other hand, if you don't attend to the day-to-day pressures, the business doesn't have a future. It's all a matter of balance, and there's no formula that tells you what that balance should be or how the balance shifts as the business situation shifts.

It's not by chance that the key to balancing work lies in learning and practicing the Top Ten Principles of a Full Spectrum business - follow the principles, and the right balance will assert itself. You won't even have to think about it.

Let's look at the next level of business development - the four foundational systems and ten strategic systems of a business
